One of this week’s featured WCS senior spotlights highlights Parker Petry. Parker is the son of Steve and Cherie Petry. During Parker’s years at Wagner Community School, he has been very active in extracurricular activities including band (two and a half years), baseball (one year), basketball (four years), football (four years), Student Council (one year), track (three years) and golf (one year).
Parker’s advice to underclassmen is “Get your stuff done on time.” Parker’s favorite class is P.E. and he does not have a favorite teacher, as he likes all of the teachers.
Parker most admires his mom and dad because of their hard work ethic. After graduation, Parker will attend Dakota State University and play football for the Trojans.
Janessa Powers
Another WCS senior that is featured in this week’s senior spotlights is Janessa Powers. She is the daughter of Enessa Weston and Jason Powers. During her high school years Janessa has been a part of basketball (one year), cross-country (two years), JAG (four years), journalism (four years), the school play (three years) and Student Council (three years). JAG is Janessa’s favorite class and Mrs. Petrik is her favorite teacher.
Janessa’s advice to underclassmen is “Live and learn from your mistakes, nobody’s perfect and we all make mistakes. It will help to learn and grow from them in the future.” Her best high school memory was becoming WCS’s first Art Club President which allowed her to be a leader and experience new things while in Art Club.
The person that Janessa most admires is Megan Sheppard. Megan was a past art instructor of Janessa’s and she inspired Janessa to start her own projects such as beading. Janessa’s favorite quote, “Without the bad times you wouldn’t appreciate the good.” After graduation, Janessa plans to attend an out of state college to major in business management and later go into cosmetology.
Madison Robertson
Another one of this week’s featured WCS seniors is Madison Robertson. Madison, who goes by Madi or Mads, is the daughter of Jen Robertson and Randy Robertson. During her years walking the halls of WCS, Madi has been involved in many extra-curricular activities including band (four years), cheer (five years), chorus (three years), FFA (four years), gymnastics (one year), journalism (four years), the school play (one year), swimming (four years) and Communities that Care (one year). Madi’s favorite class is anything taught by her favorite teacher, Evan Papousek.
Madi’s advice for underclassmen is “Don’t worry about the drama and hard times in high school, you won’t remember half of them but you will remember all the fun times.” Her best high school memories are attending Career Development Events with her FFA instructor, Evan Papousek.
“When life gives you lemons duck and let it hit the person behind you,” is Madi’s favorite quote. After graduation, she plans to attend Mitchell Tech to major in the Powerline Program. After completing the program, Madi then intends to attend Lake Area Tech to major in cosmetology.
Jackson Rolston
Jackson Rolston is another one of this week’s featured WCS seniors. Jackson is the son of Annie and Jerrod Rolston. His nicknames include Jack and Jackie. Jackson has been very active and involved during his time in high school and has participated in chorus (four years), cross-country (four years), journalism (four years), the school play (four years), National Honor Society (two years), Oral Interp (four years), Student Council (four years), swimming (four years), track (four years), Fellowship of Christian Athletes (two years) and Activity Council (three years). Mrs. Judy Ishmael and Mr. Joe Kafka are his favorite teachers and his favorite class chorus.
Jackson’s advice to underclassmen is “Don’t try to change yourself to fit in with other people. Be yourself and you will be successful.” The bus rides home for cross country meets are Jackson’s best high school memories.
“Be in control. Know who you are. And don’t try to be different, just to be different,” said by Bruno Mars is his favorite quote. When asked who he most admires, Jackson said his mom. She always makes him feel loved and appreciated and pushes him to do his best no matter what. After graduation, Jackson plans to attend the University of South Dakota to major in Elementary Education.
Presley Slaba
The final senior featured in this week’s WCS senior spotlights is Presley Slaba. Presley is the daughter of Mieke and Matthew Slaba. During her years at WCS, Presley has been very active in extracurricular activities including band (three years), chorus (four years), cross-country (four years), journalism (four years), National Honor Society (two years), Oral Interp (four years), the school play (four years), basketball stats (four years), Student Council (four years), swimming (four years) and track (four years). Biology and Baking & Pastries are Presley’s favorite classes. Her favorite teachers are Mrs. Ishmael, Mr. Kirwan and Mrs. Zephier.
Presley’s advice to underclassmen is “try your best, study as much as you can, and above all, be kind and smile.” Her best memory from high school would be the fun and laughs that she had while participating in All-State Choir.
The person that Presley most admires is her Grandma Rete because she has always inspired Presley to be strong and never give up. The bible verse from Joshua 1:9 “Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go,” is Presley’s favorite quote. After graduation, Presley plans to attend Iowa State University to major in Animal Science to possibly one day become a veterinarian.
