The Lady Raiders hosted the Corsica-Stickney Jaguars last Tuesday in girls basketball action. It was a sluggish start for both teams with Wagner taking a 10-6 lead after the first quarter. Both teams would add an additional 14 points as Wagner would take a 24-20 lead into the half. Wagner would continue to pull away as they would increase their lead to as many as 16 and eventually win by a score of 49-36. Wagner would convert on 20-42 shots for 48% while holding the Jaguars to 15-55 for 27%. Wagner would commit 11 turnovers compared to 15 from the Jaguars. Corsica Stickney would dominate the glass with a 31-23 advantage. Ashlyn Koupal would lead all scorers with 16 points, 6 boards, 6 assists, 5 blocks and 2 steals. Braxton Nedved would add 9 points and 3 boards. Lydia Yost would chip in 8 points, dish out a team high 8 assists, grab 5 boards, 2 blocks and 2 steals. Hayden Knudsen would also net 8 points. Ravyn Medricky would finish with 6 points and 7 boards. Genesis Patterson would round out the scoring with 2 points. “Defensively we did an excellent job the entire game. I didn’t realize though we got our rebounded like we did until I looked at the stats. We have to all do a better job of team rebounding. To many of us standing around watching the ball instead of going to get it. They took 13 more shots than us. We need to start getting more possessions, especially when we shoot the ball well like we did tonight. Offensively we are starting to figure out a bit how we need to approach junk defenses. We can’t just settle for perimeter shots. We need to attack and get to the paint to put pressure on the defense. We did a better job of that this game in the second half.”
