On its 27th mission, Midwest Honor Flight transported 83 veterans to Washington, D.C. for a heartfelt tour of military memorials and national landmarks. The trip honored their service by offering 'One Final Tour with Honor,' recognizing the service and sacrifice of those who never received a proper welcome home following their time in uniform.
The day concluded with an emotional welcome home ceremony at the Sioux Falls Regional Airport, where hundreds gathered to cheer, wave flags, and personally thank the veterans. Many shared how deeply meaningful it was to be greeted by a grateful community after so many years.
Among those honored was Jerome (Joker) Fischer of Wagner, who enlisted in the U.S. Navy in June 1963 at just 17 years old. Fischer served three years in foreign and/or sea service as an airplane mechanic with Attack Squadron 36, working on A-4C Skyhawks aboard the U.S.S.
Enterprise – the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to enter combat.
For his service, Fischer earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. He was honorably discharged in November 1966 and transferred to the Naval Reserve.
In 1969, Fischer joined Lockheed Martin, attached to the U.S. Army 610th Transportation Company Helicopter Squadron, where he supported CH-47 Chinook operations near Quin Nhon and Da Nang, Vietnam, continuing his service in support of U.S. operations abroad.
The Midwest Honor Flight's mission continues to ensure every veteran – especially those from the Vietnam era – receives the long-overdue recognition they deserve.
