Letter to the editor,

As most of you know, the flags that are flown in the park on federal holidays are flags that draped the caskets of our honored veterans. They are flown to pay tribute to the sacrifices they and their families have made in order to guarantee the rights and freedoms of all of our citizens.

This summer, on two occasions, flags have been vandalized. The poles have been broken and the flags have been stolen. We are disgusted that there are those in our community who do not have the decency to respect first of all, our country’s flag and second, our deceased veterans.

Whoever has vandalized and stolen these cherished mementos should be deeply ashamed of their behavior.

We are asking our community to step up and be watchful of our display in the park. If you see anyone doing anything to harm the flags, please, talk to them and explain what the flag represents, take a picture with your cell phone or call the police. We all need to be watchful and protect our freedom to fly our American flag.

This is not the first time this has happened. Last year we also lost a flag in the same manner. So please keep an eye on our display and let’s honor the veterans who gave so much to protect our freedom.
