LADY PIRATES FINISH EIGHTH PLACE AT STATE

GAME ONE Eventual state champions Deuel Cardinals defeated Avon Varsity Lady Pirates 9-2 on Thursday. Avon Lady Pirates were the first to get on the board in the third when Rilyn Thury tripled, scoring one run. Macy Voigt opened the game for Avon Varsity Lady Pirates. The starting pitcher allowed eight hits and nine runs (eight earned) over six innings, striking out seven and walking nine. Jordyn Voigt added a double and Abby Gretschmann and Brielle Voigt both singled for the Pirates. Abby Gretschmann scored both runs. GAME TWO The Lady Pirates fell 6-1 to Florence/Henry Varsity Falcon on Friday despite out-hitting them nine to seven. Rilyn Thury led Avon with three hits including a solo homerun in the top of the fifth. Macy Voigt led things off in the circle for Avon Varsity Lady Pirates. The pitcher allowed seven hits and six runs (four earned) over six innings, striking out five and walking three. Rowan Brandt added two singles. Macy Voigt. Kaeli Wallinga, Brielle Voigt, and Abby Gretschmann each added one hit apiece. GAME THREE A walk-off left the Lady Pirates on the wrong end of a 15-14 defeat to Bon Homme Cavaliers. The game was tied at 14 in the bottom of the seventh when Bon Homme scored the final winning run. Avon collected 19 hits and Bon Homme Cavaliers had 14 in the high-scoring affair. The Cavaliers jumped out to an early 5-0 lead. However, Avon flipped the game on its head in the top of the third, scoring six runs on seven hits to take the lead, 6-5. The biggest blow in the inning was a single by Jordyn Voigt on the seventh pitch of the at-bat that drove in two. The Lady Pirates made the score 11-10 in the top of the sixth inning when Kaeli Wallinga hammered a solo home run to center field, and Rowan Brandt singled, scoring one run. Avon tied the game in the top of the seventh thanks to a solo home run to center field by Macy Voigt, a triple by Brielle Voigt, a single by Brandt, and a single by Abby Gretschmann. Voigt stepped in the circle first for Avon Varsity Lady Pirates. The hurler gave up 14 hits and 15 runs (10 earned) over six innings, striking out eight and walking seven. Macy Voigt, Brielle Voigt, Rowan Brandt, and Abby Gretschmann all collected three hits for the Pirates. Both Pria Sesler and Abby Gretschmann made terrific plays in the field. The Lady Pirates end the year with an 8th place finish at state and a season record of 15 and 13. Coach Kuhlman would like to thank assistant coaches, Tom Pier, Christena Voigt, and Laura Haynes for all of their help. In addition, the team would like to thank the school, parents, and the entire community for their support of the Avon Softball team. It was a great run, and we are already looking forward to next year!
