Greer Post #11 American Legion held its monthly meeting June 18th at the Post Home. Commander Robert Kucera called the members to attention. Chaplain Donald Kotab gave the invocation, which was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. The Preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion was recited by all members.
Adjutant Rados read the minutes of the February meeting, there were no meetings in March, April or May. Motion to approve by Robert Kisely, seconded by Jerald Ehrisman.
Committee reports were given as follows:
Dan Gruenwald distributed a financial report for the last four months which was approved as given.
Americanism: Don Kotab reported Boys State has been canceled. Don has filed the Post Americanism report to State Headquarters. Don announced the four $500 American Legion Scholarship winners were: Callie Frei, Rose Eitemiller, Preston Nedved and Chance Blaha.
Commander Kucera reported bingo did pretty good but was shortened by the virus.
Service Officer: Merle Stone gave sick calls and relief. Richard Dvorak reported Eugene Dressler is in the hospital and is doing well and should go home in ten days. He also reported that Roger Frankenstein was in the Heart Hospital and recovering.
Legion Rides are getting a slow start this year. Will have a meeting to elect officers.
Adjutant Rados reported the Annual Sweepstakes went very good and we did very good, as we annually do. Clayton thanked Legion members who helped sell tickets and worked at the sweepstakes. Also a big thank you to Margarette Schuurmans, Bryan Slaba and Lynn Soukup who donated their winnings back to the American Legion.
Baseball: Jerry Seiner reported the American Legion will not have a Regional or State Baseball Tournament so our Post will not have a Legion baseball team because only Winner and Tabor have a local Legion baseball team. Jerry also reported there will be a 13 and 14 year old teener league and a 15 and 16 year old VFW team. A motion was made to give $50 to each of the ones who would have been our coaches, Sam Metzger and Matt Slaba, for all the phone calls they made.
Commander Kucera reported we will need help putting the flags in the park for the 4th of July. He also reported a flag and two-thirds of the pole was stolen from the park over Flag Day weekend.
Merle Stone read a poem written by Charles Dawes when he was 19 years old and in a prison camp. The poem was called "Just a piece of cloth".
Vice Commander Dennis Clemens read thank you cards from the four scholarship winners: Callie Frei, Rose Eitemiller, Preston Nedved and Chance Blaha. A thank you card was also received from Ernest and Theresa Kocer for the prize they won at the Legion's sweepstakes.
Dennis Clemens reported he will retire from being on the Honor Guard due to health reasons.
Adjutant Rados presented Legion members with Go-Getter Pins for signing up new members. Also, State Commander Fred Nelson pins to the members on the Honor Guard.
There was some discussion on the cemetery, if we would donate to help take care of it. It was tabled until next month.
Jerry Seiner reported Sioux Falls VA is not open, they may open July 1st at 25% normal. Emergencies can go to the local hospitals and they must be turned in to state in 72 hours.
Chaplain Kotab gave the final prayer. The meeting was adjourned in due form.
