10 Years Ago – 2014 A new track was laid at the Avon High School by Fisher Track. The 66th Annual Czech Days celebration will be held this weekend. Cheylee Nagel competed at the Jr. High Rodeo in Des Moines in goat tying. Erica donated 12 inches of her hair to Locks of Love. 35 Years Ago – 1989 Avon and Tripp Legion teams have combined to play baseball. Brad Poppe is the coach. The first two games were lost to Parkston and Freeman. The Mets lost 1-7 to Yankton’s Milwaukee Brewers. Fire school was held at Pierre. Attending were Jarv Winckler, Vern Tolsma, Kevin Tjeerdsma, Rod Haenfler, Bill Mudder, Larry Mudder, Jay Mudder, Rodger Brandt, Jim Hento, Lewis Bertsch, Dave Brandt and Brian Janssen. John and Delores Lukkes will celebrate their 40th Anniversary at the First Baptist Church. School election will be June 20th. Jerry Hayward is running against Adella Mudder and Robert Ballard is running against Ernie Namminga. 56 Years Ago – 1968 Funeral services for Fred Sattler, age 91, were held. The Avon Teeners lost to Wagner 13-9. Karl Raysby pitched and was also the leading Avon hitter. Leanne Bertus and James Ratzlaff were married June 7th at the Zion Lutheran Church. Her three sisters and a school classmate served as bridesmaids wearing yellow. The Perkins Store will have free watermelon on Saturday. The American Legion will have their 4th annual supper on June 29th for the entire family. All you can eat – adults -- $1.25 and children - - 75 cents. 85 Years Ago – 1939 Mr. Carl Bach is home from the Yankton Hospital and plans to move to Rapid City in the near future. Edwin Voigt, son of Ralph, broke his arm last week. Poppy Day was May 27th. The WCTU held their meeting at Kingsburg. Mrs. Lester Lorenz and Mrs. EJ Pritzkau visited with Mrs. Van Duysen on Monday. 110 Years Ago – 1914 Yankton College had the biggest graduating class in history. They had 20 graduates. William Fathke filed on a 320 acre claim in Montana. A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Tom Cihak. A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Neil Berry.
