10 YEARS AGO 2015 During the South Dakota Highway Patrol Youth Trooper Academy ceremony two awards were presented for top shooters in the class. Both awards were earned by the recruits of Avon. Alexandria Duncan earned Top Gun for her skill on the .40 caliber pistol. The Top gun award for the M-16 rifle was presented to Joshua Knodel with a score of 1999 out of 200 possible points. 35 YEARS AGO 1990 On July 4th the Avon Chamber will have free watermelon and an Old Timers game against the Mets. Robin Williams and Donavan Voigt are engaged. A Lippert Reunion was held on Sunday. Avon and Tripp have combined for a Legion Baseball team. July 10-11 Bear's Northvue will have a carnival, water slide, mini golf and many food specials. 56 YEARS AGO 1969 A free-swinging Mets humbled Freeman with a 21-0 win. Avon scored 10 runs in the 6th and the game was then called. Tricia Merkwan is spending the week with her grandparents, the Steve Merkwans. Trumbo School will join Avon next year. John Meidinger, son of John and Bettie Meidinger, was the Valedictorian of the Fair Oaks, CA, graduating class of 405 seniors. He is the grandson of John and Lydia Thesenga Mr. and Mrs. Louis Dykstra are the parents of a baby girl, Ronda Arlene. She joins five brothers. 85 YEARS AGO 1940 The Avon Merchants lost 10-3 to Scotland. They played the Internaionals in a 10 inning thriller 6-5. Willis Engel was on the mound. Young Willis came in to pitch with the bases loaded and two outs and retired the side. In the last of the 10th inning he scored on a wild pitch to win the game. Velma Hubner and LaVelle Meiers were married at Laverne, Minnesota at 7 o'clock on Sunday. Magdalene Berndt and Oscar Van Asperen were the witnesses. A reception was held at the home of the bride on Tuesday. 109 YEARS AGO 1916 The German Baptist Sunday school will have their picnic at the James Johnson farm on July 4th. A big dance was held at the John C. Hornstra barn. The Hornstra Brothers Orchestra furnished the music. The First Presbyterian Sunday School held their picnic at Smith's grove on Friday. All businesses in Avon have mutually agreed to close on July 4th.
