The Wagner High School volleyball team held their annual Dig Pink night on Tuesday, October 15th against the Parkston Trojans. As October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, both the Parkston and Wagner teams partnered with Apparel WorX to sell t-shirts for what has become an annual Parkston vs Wagner Dig for a Cure game. Every year, Apparel WorX designs a t-shirt for the game with both communities able to purchase. The team that sells the most shirts received a $100 donation from Apparel WorX. All attending fans were encouraged to wear pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness. Players for the Wagner team even threw out mini pink volleyballs to fans after the starting lineup was announced.
This year, the Dig Pink Traveling Trophy was presented to Stacy Fousek as this year’s Wagner Raider match honoree. Coach Stacey Knebel presented Stacy Fousek with the trophy.
The Wagner girls’ volleyball team unanimously wanted to choose Fousek as their honoree. Fousek had battled breast cancer ten years prior and is currently in remission. Fousek has also been a part of the Wagner volleyball program, coaching Junior High volleyball teams in previous years.
Players from both the Wagner and Parkston team were given different colored paper ribbons. Each of the colors representing different types of cancer. They were each asked to write down a name or names of people who were either battling, had battled or had lost their battle with cancer that each player was playing in honor of for the game. A nice display was then created on one of the folded bleachers with all of the different ribbons surrounding a large volleyball with Dig for the Cure printed on it. The annual Dig Pink game has been a part of the yearly Wagner volleyball schedule for over 22 years.
