At Wagner Community School, where tradition and pride run deep, Gannon Knebel stands out not just for his athletic talent, but for the mindset and work ethic that drive his success. Recently named an Elite Eight Athlete, Gannon is a standout in wrestling and football—but he remains grounded, focused, and fiercely competitive.

“I’ve always had a ‘one match at a time’ mindset,” Gannon says. “It’s easy to look at the big goals early in the season, but I like to improve week by week and build off that.” That steady, determined approach has carried him through seasons and high-pressure moments, especially during a state title match. “Everything’s on the line there, but I try to treat it like any other match and compete to the best of my ability.”

Gannon loves to score points and dominate every match and has a “go, go, go” mentality. Training in the off-season is the biggest factor in being able to compete in three sports. “Eating right, lifting, and conditioning are very important to me,” he added.

While wrestling has brought much success, it’s football that’s always held a special place in his heart. “Football, for sure, has always been my favorite. I love the violence and the competitiveness. You’ve got to be mentally sharp and tough every single play.” On the field, his mental focus and drive set him apart—traits that mirror his attitude on the mat.

With his eyes set on 200 wrestling wins and state titles in both football and wrestling, Gannon knows staying healthy and consistent is key. “I’m honored to receive this award,” he says. “It’s a testament to my hard work and dedication.”

Gannon credits one person as his greatest influence—his father. “He’s always in my corner at wrestling matches and on the sidelines at football games. He gives me good advice and picks me up when I fail.”
