Each year, volunteers across Charles Mix County dedicate their time and talents to making their communities a better place to live. These efforts were celebrated during National Volunteer Week, April 20–26, joining millions of volunteers nationwide being recognized for their contributions.
South Dakota 4-H programs rely heavily on volunteer support. This year, 30 individuals have stepped up to serve as 4-H club leaders, project leaders, county fair volunteers, 4-H Council members, and in various other key roles.
“4-H volunteers are a key piece to creating positive experiences for youth in South Dakota,' said Jenae K. Hansen-Gross, South Dakota 4-H Volunteer Specialist. 'Their efforts benefit our communities, our 4-H program, and our youth in their shared interests. Volunteer efforts build leaders and prepare youth to be ready for future careers. They are the essential element to helping youth find their spark.'
According to the 2024 North Central Region Volunteer Impact Study, South Dakota 4-H volunteers contribute an average of 108 hours each year, supporting local youth through club meetings, shooting sports practices, community service projects, contest preparation, and more.
The impact of South Dakota 4-H volunteers is ongoing. Every day, a volunteer plays a role in ensuring local youth have access to meaningful experiences with caring adults — experiences that not only strengthen young people but also the communities they call home.
