AVON PUBLIC LIBRARY MEETING MINUTES OF NOVEMBER 29TH
By
Meeting was called to order at 4:11 p.m. Attendance included Ilene Muller, Twila Lukkes, Mary Beth Driesen, Julie Minow, Mary Hurd, and Loretta Knodel.
The minutes of last meeting (08/23/23) were read by Julie Minow. Mary Hurd moved to approve the meeting minutes and Ilene Muller seconded the motion. August 23, 2023 meeting minutes were approved.
The library’s checking account ending balance as of November 29, 2023 was presented by Twila Lukkes as $16, 711.23. Discussion was had on the library’s budget. A shortage was recorded in previous years. However previous years the annual budget was not adequate to meet necessary expenses. City Liaison presented a more realistic budget for 2024 that was approved by the city council, and the board will monitor expenses going forward.
The library will purchase table and chairs with the money from the Soukup donation. A plaque will also be purchased in honor of Sara Soukup. Mary Hurd will look into plaque details and finalize with the board. The Christmas story hour on November 25, 2023 was a success. Over twenty children were gathered for the reading. Julie Minow read Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Lost Christmas! Grinch themed snacks were served afterwards with the Grinch drink being the hit!
The board is planning on rearranging the librarian’s desk and the children’s area to create a better workspace flow in the library. This will hopefully create better seating options for the summer reading program when there are forty plus people in the library. It will also hopefully reduce the noise level that goes through the vents into the city’s finance office. The plan is to rearrange the furniture on December 9th, 1-3pm.
The library was donated a Cricut by Rick and Mary Hurd. This will be able to be used by library patrons during library hours. The library uses the Cricut to make cut outs for our summer reading program. A class will be held to make Christmas gift tags and to introduce the Cricut machine to patrons.
Discussion on new carpet and repainting library was tabled. Library is going to look into purchasing lighting for the end stacks. It is very dark on both end stack aisles facing the wall. Discussion was had on library terms for board members. The board would like to review the by-laws at a later library meeting.
The next library meeting was scheduled for January 10th, 2024 at 4pm.
Mary Beth motioned to adjourn the meeting. Loretta Knodel seconded the motion. Meeting was adjourned at 5:26 pm.
Respectfully submitted, Julie Minow Vice President- Secretary
