On November 1st, the four All-Staters: Lance Odens (bass), Lexi Vanderlei (soprano), Breanna Hento (alto), and Sean Schryvers (tenor), traveled to Sioux Falls, to sing 8 songs. The song selections they sang were: “Star-Spangled Banner” – Francis Scott Key/John Stafford/arr. Dale Grotenhuis, “Battle Hymn of the Republic” – arr. Peter Wilhousky, “Until I Reach My Home” – arr. Brandon A. Boyd, “It Takes A Village” – Joan Szymko, “Plaudite, Psallite” – Kestutis Daugirdas, “Measure Me, Sky!” – Elaine Hagenberg, “Fever Dreams” – Erich Eastman,“let me listen” – Dan Forrest. Seniors Lexi Vanderlei and Lance Odens have both made their mark in the All-State Choir. Lexi participated for one year, while Lance enjoyed the experience for two years. Both singers shared that their favorite song to perform was “Fever Dreams.” For Lexi, the best part of All-State was “getting to see people and everything you learn,” while Lance’s highlight was working with the director. Lexi says she’ll miss “being part of a select group of people who love the same thing,” and Lance admits he’ll miss staying in a hotel and DoorDashing with friends. Avon High school choir director Autumn Schultz has been sharing her passion for music with students for 15 years. For her, music is more than just notes and lyrics, it’s a way to express yourself, connect with others in a fun group setting, and bring together a mix of different classes into one community. When reflecting on this year’s All-State experience, Mrs. Schultz said her favorite part was watching the rehearsals, especially because of the talented and inspiring director leading them. As for the music, she couldn’t choose just one standout — she loved “Fever Dreams” for its performance energy, and “Let Me Listen” for the inspiration and emotion it carried.
